Since you are using konq I'll assume you're using KDE.
right click on the xmms icon and click "edit item"
the command section should be just xmms
If it has some bit about soundwrapper in there, take it out.
That usually fixes xmms not working in kde. You can probably run it from the
command line just fine as it is.
