How about this, launch xmms from a shell (you may have to be root. Its odd but 
while I can run XMMS from a menu or icon as user, I can't launch it from a 
shell. Not sure why), something like:

/usr/bin/xmms --play <name of MP3 song>

See if it gives you some error messages that might clue you in?
