Usually, using ubuntuguide.org solves all of the problems you
mentioned. I just installed dapper drake, and didn't have to config
kernels, go to another runlevel or whatever. I just added the
repositories, updated, installed nvidia-glx and exec'ed the command it
asked me to say.

Evidently, the "don't think Windows when you use Linux" is valid
between distros too. This is Ubuntu, not Mandriva.
