Won't Ubuntu open deb packages from Kubuntu and vice versa? I normally
avoid GNOME/Gtk because I don't like my desktop to look like a child's
painting book, but some GNOME apps are essential (the GIMP, for
example).

Ha ha, that sounds like the Debian we all know and love. I'm told it's
the best of all distros, so long as your employer will give you a
year's sabbatical to install it ;-)
