You will need to find out what bios version you have in the laptop. You can 
get that from the boot screen, its in the string of words and numbers at the 
beginning of the boot process normally when its doing the memory count. Hit 
the pause / break button and write it down (hitting any key after will resume 
the boot process). I can't see any usb boot fixes on

from the "fixes" tab on the page you gave,  which lists a number of bios 
files. You might be able to borrow a usb cdrom or a usb external drive 
enclosure and put a ide cdrom in it and boot from that. External drive 
enclosures run around £15 - £20 and you can take out the cdrom from your 
desktop to try it out.
