It can be done - Acronis backup for Windows is a linux program that
writes to ntfs very reliably. Perhaps they have put in the effort to
make it reliable. It is a matter of reliability, as I understand it.
Several linuxes will write ntfs, but occasionally might trash the file
system beyond repair. Is Knoppix known to be 'bullet-proof' on ntfs
writes?

My understanding is that some distros have disabled writing because of
the reliability problem. Perhaps some MD person might comment on this.
