SVGA simply happens to be the server into which most of the drivers found their way in 3.3.6... It's not really generic. For 3.3.6, using vesafb with XF86_FBDev is the unaccelerated, generic method. VESA, OTOH is truly generic (and is a 4.x driver). SVGA is suggested with 3.3.6 because it offers accelerated support for many cards.
