I am reading the digest version of this list, so replying to the precise thread is a bit of an art, but let's see if using this subject line works any better this time...
Dan, I don't think your system locking up has anything to do with the Radeon 64 card. I don't get this problem on my HP Pavillion, but I had this very same problem on another box (a Compaq Presario box running an Nvidia Vanta card). My guess is that your problem is due to an energy saving mode setting in your computer's BIOS. My Compaq also seemed to lock up after the screen saver kicked in for too long - regardless of what operating system was running. I have three different OS boots on that Compaq box: Linux, the original Windows ME, and Windows 2000, and all three of them were getting locked-up by that BIOS setting. To fix it, you'll need to get into your BIOS setup program at boot time (try the F1 or maybe the delete key). Look for something like "Power Management" and try experimenting with different settings. On mine, it was set to "Return to Last State" and I fixed it by changing to "Always Return" or something like that. As for needing 3D acceleration, I agree. Ultimately, I too will be needing a working 3d accelerated video card for my Linux boot. The problem is that I am still a little gun shy about buying yet another video card when I already spent $400 on this ATI Radeon 64 DDR VIVO (and it was supposedly the better card for Linux/Mesa/OpenGL support). Ironically, this card finally actually works as advertised in Windows XP Home (which is the first time I've ever seen it pull in composite video at all, as this feature never worked in Windows ME either). I built my Windows XP Home boot on an extra drive on this box, so I guess I'm interested in holding out a little longer to see whether there isn't a way to fix this driver issue for my Linux boot (he said as he dusted off his Gnu C compiler and began looking for specs and clues on how to get started writing/fixing video device drivers...). In the meantime, there are plenty of reasons to run Linux aside from 3d acceleration. -dav0 -- __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas.
