does it have any exit messages at the end? maybe try editing your /etc/ttys file, and have xdm not respawn; then try logging in and when it fails, see what the final messages in the X log say. (otherwise when XDM starts again after the failed login, it'll probably overwrite the last log). just stabbing in the dark here; I don't know much about XDM.
