OK, do you have

DisplayManager.errorLogFile:    /var/log/xdm-errors

in your /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config?  That will define where the log file
goes.  First make sure that file is empty so we're not confused by
ancient history, then turn on xdm in /etc/ttys and kill -1 1 (SIGHUP to
init).  That should cause the xdm login dialog to pop up.  Tell us what
it looks like, and if it stays up and stable for half a minute or so try
logging in.  If not, post that xdm-errors file.
