you're right, I just meant that I only have problems with the xdm and not using startx. I set xdm to start when I bootup, and it doesn't work for me, if I kill those processes and login through the terminal as root and run startx, then x will start up fine for me. I'm just stuck as to why the xdm, after approving my login (no error) can't start my enlightenment, or gnome, and keeps restarting x (repeating the login session over and over, with the error messages in my .xsession-errors).
