Did you install XFree86 3.3.6 from the base installation, or 4.1.0 from
the packages?

Did you do the X configuration at the end of the installation process?
I don't understand what you mean by HDD here.

You don't normally run xinit directly, but rather you run startx, a
shell script which runs xinit.

The standard window manager is twm. The standard xinitrc will start it
with three xterms. I believe clicking on the root window puts up a menu
which allows you to start a few standard X utilities.

I'm not familiar with this. It may be better supported by 4.1.0 than by
3.3.6.

It looks to me like you didn't configure your Xserver at all, but that's
just a guess.

installation. After the base tar files are unpacked, the installer
directs you to configuring your system and installing packages. It
sounds like you got impatient and skipped that step. Run
/stand/sysinstall (as root) and pick "Configure" (5th item) from the
main menu. Try "XFree86" near the bottom of the Configure menu. While
you're at it, you'll probably want to take care of some other system
administration duties, like "TimeZone", "Mouse", "Networking", "User
Management". Look around at what the menu offers. You probably do NOT
want "Fdisk" or "Label". "Desktop" is for configuring (and I think
installing) KDE and Gnome. "Packages" is for installing any of ~6000
other programs.
