It would be helpful to see you XF86Config resp. XF86Config-4 (depending on distro)

look in your XF86Config[-4] there is a screen section, there there should be a default 
depth and a
couple of display subsections, you should either change the default depth to the depth 
of one of
the subsections or create / change a subsection so that you have a 32 depth...
Regretably there is also the possibility that you have one of the radeon giving 
problems, use
google on the list archives to find out about those and the current solutions (I 
believe 4.2
should (?) solve these problems.
