We're straying from the topic of this list, but since it's a newbies list I'll remain on my soapbox a bit longer.

You see, Unix has an installed base that goes back well over 25 years, back to the days when computers were really expensive, slow, and small (in terms of memory and disk size). "Binary executable program files" was abbreviated to "bin", "unallocated system resources" was abbreviated to "usr" to save precious space and processing time (and typing, as you'd understand if you'd ever used a KSR33 teletype). You can't just change the names that people have been using for many years. Paul Sherman's "core" file is another example of this. -- Remember, more computing power was thrown away last week than existed in the world in 1982. -- http://www.tom.womack.net/computing/prices.html _______________________________________________ Newbie mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** To unsubscribe , or change message options, see: http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/newbie
