Success on all counts! Removing the "core" file in root freed up enough memory to enable root to run X.
>From there I went to see what could be done with my user accounts to get the window manager to come up. I went to the user account, typed "startx" and it immediately came up with Gnome running... To be honest, I'm not sure how it worked. I suspect that in trying to get X useable on any account, I copied a good .xinitrc file over to the home directory. Then, for some reason, it would not work until I had a successful X session on root. (maybe the core dump affected both accounts?) Granted, the user account comes up in Gnome while the root comes up in KDE, but I'll work on that. Now I can run X as a user, not just root (Yay!) Anyway, thanks for the help, especially to Ted Spradley and Jarmo Paavilainen.
