Glad to find someone who has been involved with computers longer than I have... I actually could have started at the same time as you, but for the fact that every one involved at the time seemed rather strange (riding monowheels through the corridors, looking like Frankenstein's brother etc...) wondering whether there was any causal link I decided to avoid the whole area. Regrettably, the military during my military service decided that since I had never touched a computer, I had to be an expert in the area. I then ended up becoming one (it is long ago and the expertise is long forgotten). I obviously found out that I had been right about the causality... At least I did not start smoking which all my colleagues ended up doing...
The bit about Linux or X being easy is obviously completely false. This list is the proof of it. The main problem is the lack of drivers due to the missing motivation of most cards manufacturers. Another problem is the way the documentation is presented: The man pages are very verbose and are not always structured, the how-to s can go from excellent to less than satisfactory. This is understandable because those who compile and maintain the documentation are doing it in their free time and, regrettably, still must eat and sleep from time to time... For me I use Linux and X to get back into the technology (after having tried to get out of it during most of my professional life - computers being only tools for my activities, but I very often not being able to obtain capacity from the IT department...) I have mainly difficulties getting used to OOP (why use a 2KB assembler program to do what a 10MB C++ program can do?) Anyhow I find it pretty trying from time to time and do feel for you... cheers Lionel <snip> > > You have my sincere condolences.
