Ted replying again...

What changed is that you stored more files in the root filesystem.
Logging in as root, your home directory is in the root filesystem,
so
any mp3s and jpegs you save in your home directory take up space in
the
root filesystem. Learn about the df and du commands and try to
figure
out how much space you have and where.

Thanks - I'll look the commands up. I was happy to find my old Unix
handbook from
college, it has a nice summary of most commands. Since I don't have any
multimedia files on the system, there shouldn't be much space used up.

This has always been the case? You've never used it successfully
except
as root since you installed it?

Sadly, true. The user accounts work only at the command line, they have
never
worked in X since installation.

You have my sincere condolences. I'm struggling to restrain myself
from
launching into a vitriolic rant about how I've devoted my life to
computing since 1965 and I can't keep up with all this complexity
(I'm
not an idiot. National Merit Scholar and college graduate,
Electrical
Engineering, not Basketweaving). And you think you should be able
to
dabble in it happily, about once a week. My condolences really are
sincere. When they told you it was easy they lied.

I'm not too dumb either, I also have an EE degree and postgrad work in life
sciences and radiology physics. I never expected it to be easy. But until
two months ago, I didn't know the mail groups existed. Any time I run into
a
problem, I work at it when I have time (along with my other professional and
personal commitments).
