I ran the Xconfigurator and selected 800x600 because if 1024x768 is selected, I can only have a visable screen for the vertical 1 inch on the far right of the screen. The rest is black. Pasted below is my congfig file as requested.
Thanks for the help

This is not much info... your XF86Config-4 (assuming you are really running 4.0.3 -which is what
you get with RH7.1 in adition to 3.3.6) and a log would help
what you see with 800x600 and 640x480 is the *normal* display on a lcd screen when you are running
at a lower resolution. I don't know your machine but assuming the screen is 1024x768 then you have
112 pixel not addressed right and left of the 800x600 display. since 800x600 works I assume that
there is not that much missing to get 1024x768, I suspect you don't need chassing sync specs and
the like.
First check that you are really running 4.0.3 by doing X -version (you can also chek the log, it's
printed on top, the log is /var/log/XFree86.0.log)
If for some strange reason you were to be running 3.3.6 then post /etc/X11/XF86Config otherwise
post /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
