I ran into the same problem. XFree86 4.2.0 requires version 2.2
of the glibc library which is not part of Debian 2.2r5. Instead
I installed XFree86 4.1 which apparently did not require the 2.2
version and it installed cleanly! I don't however know the differences
between 4.1 and 4.2 but I'm sure they are outlined somewhere.

It very simply means that potato is to old to support XF86 4.2 I would
recommend you do a dist-upgrade to woody. Woody has a newer version of
XF86(4.1) and it is all around better. You are going to have to do it
soon anyway(hopefully), so you might as well do it now and get it over
with. But be warned, read the documentation on changing dists, or you
are in for some nasty surprises.
