There are probably dependencies on so many libraries, that you can't
use this approach without screwing your potato system completely up.

You may be interested in trying this version of XFree86 4.1.0 for
potato:
        <http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/xf410_potato/READ.THIS>

NB!  I haven't used this myself.  I use debian testing, instead of
stable.
