Hans,
in the RH world (and possibly elsewhere) *possibly in the newer versions only if one's 
graphic
adapter is not that new...* one gets both X 4.x.x and X 3.3.6 as well as two Config 
files
XF86Config and XF86Config-4 the former for 3.3.6 the later for 4.x.x. In such a case, 
X is a
symlink to either XFree86 (X 4.x.x) or XF86_whatever ( X 3.3.6, whatever being often 
SVGA).
