Oh dear - I must have been having a senior moment! Yes - I can now see the logic of a perimeter fence (I had forgotten that a closed way would be an area) - and, yes - it is only my laziness that led me to forget that I could manually add barrier=fence to a node (although it would be nice if that option was included in the preset ... and if it rendered - only ways and areas render with barrier=fence).
