You may have to tweak you XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11, but you could try XFree86 -configure first. In the config file, there's a section called Screen with Display subsections. In the one with Depth 24, see what the Modes are. If 1400x1050 isn't in there, add it in the list. 1400x1050 is a less common resolution so it's likely it's not in there and that's your only problem. I hope you are that lucky. If things still don't work, then tell what is in the Device section and maybe someone can be of further assistance.
