I second the Debian suggestion made elsewhere.  It is comparatively difficult to install, but very educational.  It is also quite easy to keep up-to-date.  It probably has the most rigorous testing period and standards.  If you want the Debian fun without the installation pain, consider either Libranet or Xandros.  These are Debian-based distros that have been made somewhat friendlier.

Subject: [newbies] Which Linux Distributions do you recommend?

Hi there!

I have a 60 GB hard drive that I am considering partitioning into three 20 GB partitions. The question is, which distributions should I put on each partition? I was considering Fedora, Mandrake and SUSE but would definitely be interested in other suggestions. I am new to Linux and want to learn about different versions. Which three distributions would you recommend starting with? I’m not overly considered about difficulty level in installing, I just want to learn.

Also, I am interested in which desktop environments I should check out. Of course I will try KDE and Gnome but are there others that might also me worth playing around with? I’m a newbie and don’t know what is really out there.

Thanks for any suggestions

David Darrough
