I find that having a nice large vise to hold it helps. You need a minimum of
tools and a maximum of patience. Start with a a clean work-space and if
possible, work over an old sheet. Makes parts easy to find. Before you
disassemble it, connect the battery directly to the terminal and starter case
to see if it works out of the bike. I lay it on the floor and step on it to
prevent it moving. Works Y-N ? If yes, stop. Make sure the engine can be turned
by removing the chrome cover and turning the crankshaft with a wrench.
Whatever you checked for voltage with, if you can check for resistance, see how
much there is from the terminal to the case of the starter. Probably an
infinite resistance. Can you turn the output shaft ? Y-N ? Now disassemble it.
SLOWLY
Removing the end cover that holds the brush assemblies can be a surprising
moment and a dirty one too. You may see the need for the sheet... Forward pix
of parts if possible. Make notes of placement of all thrust washers and other
parts. In all likelihood, you'll need brushes and clean-up of the armature. The
wear of the armature dictates the extent of clean-up needed.

hi again guys....

it took me a little while but i finally got the "quick test" that
Dennis suggested done with a fully charged battery new solenoid
installed...results were that i do have exactly 12V at the starter
terminal when I press the button.

so according to Dennis, i am in for a 'starter rebuild'...so...yep
i'm
gonna need some help...

i got my manual and my tools, all i need is some suggestions as to how
to get this done, what am i looking for? ... i'm gonna read my manual
and checkout "Dan's Motorcycle Repair" site while i wait for
suggestions from my trusty, knowledgeable, fellow group members....

just for starters, i disconnected the solonoid from the battery and
the starter....so i guess next thing to do is take the starter
out...any thing special that i should know or look for or check
for? ....

thanks for all your help...

off nothing else should matter. When you check for voltage at the starter, use a
frame ground and not the battery negative terminal for a second check to verify
battery ground to frame. I'm just trying to make sure the ONLY thing wrong
is the starter. This is starting to sound more like a cluster.
