Great observation. That was a real problem eons ago, and I saw more than my share of bikes with huge holes in the back of the motor where the chain wadded up and.... Most bikes now have a close fitting guide that routes the chain out the bottom. It's still not a pretty sight but saves the engine. Wish I'd have saved pictures of the holes in some old CB750's. Gruesome.
