Great observation. That was a real problem eons ago, and I saw more than my 
share of bikes with huge holes in the back of the motor where the chain wadded 
up and....
Most bikes now have a close fitting guide that routes the chain out the bottom. 
It's still not a pretty sight but saves the engine. Wish I'd have saved 
pictures of the holes in some old CB750's. Gruesome.

If the $250 includes installation, it's reasonable.

Buy the best you can afford.  Next to tires, a reliable chain/sprocket
combo is money well spent.  No telling what mayhem could result if one
breaks while the bike is in motion.  Never seen or heard of that
happening, but I can imagine the result is not pretty.
