Once when I was going to New Orleans from BR  I could see a tire coming apart
on one a good ways in front of me.  I have always been leary of being behind an
18wheeler that appears to be old and not well maintained, for that reason.  Two
times I actually saw a whole cap come off a tire and wondered where whoever it
was bought them.  Once I saw a car swerve a little too sharply to avoid flying
bits of rubber off a recap on a trailer and thought for a moment he would lose
control, because he was all over the road.
You're looking at some serious damage if one flys apart at speed...

I used to drive trucks. The ones that follow the trucks haven't thought about
the big chunks of rubber they see one the road. Most of that rubber is from
truck tires.
The high cost running a truck has forest trucks to use recap tires.  Most of
the time it works out good, but some of the tires do come apart. If you are to
close to
the back of the truck when this happens its not going to be bugs you are eating.

My "survival" says: NEVER drive - car or motorcycle - so close behind anything
that you can't see the road ahead and what is happening there, even if it means
backing off and getting repeatedly passed, or speeeeeding up and passing.  I
got to have my visibility.  I see cars "drafting" behind semi trucks oblivious
to everythng.  That will work 999,999 times out of a million; but that other
one time........................... Real oblivion.......... I think it's
interesting to see the shit other people get into, I just want to remain an
observer.......
