Expected mileage for kevlar? In my research all I can find are the words "long lasting". Off the bat we know it is not going to last as long as OEM steel. The life of a clutch also depends a great deal on the rider and application. Considering I got 23k out of my OEM clutch I think 10-15 is probably a reasonable expectation??? The truth is nothing on the market is as durable as steel plates but there are a ton of materials that will grab better. I believe kevlar is the most durable as well as heat resistant of these alternate materials.
It should make for a more aggressive clutch but I hope not too aggressive. We'll find out soon enough. Like I said I see nothing but good reviews on this KG stuff and it is nice to hear you've heard good things about them too Dennis. I hope this works really well because those plates are only $50. If it works great for that price I'll happily change them every 5k if I had to. It is more or less the same as installing stronger springs but a cheaper solution. Using Kevlar friction plates with the soft OEM springs wouldn't change the tension on the cable and should allow for better grip while also allowing the clutch to engage smoothly. In VW Beetles, Gene Berg sold a device that gave a slight cushion to the engagement of a racing clutch to soften the blow. Not just to the crankshaft, but the relatively soft magnesium alloy case as well. You see, the crank is forged, rather than cast, so that it can flex without breaking. A certain amount of flex is required, because of the flexibility of the case. A cast crankshaft would break from the flexing; indeed, even some forged ones do from time to time. It is rare, and the only one I have knowlege of personally, the engine still ran, although with a wierd noise and rhythm. But it ran!! Upon teardown, lo and behold: broken crank! It lasted 23k and won't have the problems of an aftermarket clutch. A simple boost for the springs is one spark plug washer under each spring. No more, just one. Heavy springs are a strain on the clutch cable and make for jerky starts. Nasty clutches are for racers, not street bikes. They get old fast. Hard riding makes for grooves worn on the clutch basket, which in turn makes for a less than smooth operation. Do what you want, I just don't care for aftermarket clutches. Put enough in bikes in my time... Proper adjustment makes for long life on the OEM.
