There are as many types and styles of bags as there are motorcycles, so it's neccessary to narrow choices down by deciding what uses you'll put them to -- touring, commuting, running errands, etc. Do you want permanent installation or no? Hard bags or soft? Expensive or cheap? Saddle bags, tail bags, tank bags?
All have advantages and disadvantages. Hard bags are generally expensive, that is if you can find them at all to fit the Nighthawk. Soft bags are more versatile, but usually require some innovation to attach them to the bike and get them to stay put. There's one "system" I have my eye on for my '95. It features a one- time installation of a rail to which you can attach several mix or match accessories -- a sissy-type bar for soft bag touring luggage, or a grab handle when not carrying luggage, or a rack and grab handle for light luggage. The accessories are instantly interchangeable, depending on the type carrying you plan to do, and they offer specially designed bags for it. Kinda pricey, but very versatile, seems to me. Haven't sprung for it myself, but queried the company to see if it would fit my bike. They sent me a copy of the installation instructions for the '91-'03 Nighthawks, so I know it will.
