Hello, everyone. A new member to the board and a happy new owner of a
'83 650.

I was wondering about idle speeds on a cold start.

I have no issue with starting and waiting for the bike to warm up,
helps the bike and I get focused for the ride, but I do want to ask
about where do your bikes idle when first started cold / with choke
fully on? With no throttle, mine hovers right around 700/800rpms (and
frequently dips too low, necessitating a restart) for a minute or two
before it begins to warm up. I sometimes give it just the barest
minimum of throttle in hopes of keeping it from dying, but as you
know, throttle and full choke aren't really complementary, so its up
in the air how much that really helps.

Eventually when the idle nears 1500 I bring down the choke in
increments until it idles around 1000 when off fully. Then it's time
to ride!

Does that seem about standard for your 26 year old bikes?

Caveats/details - fuel flowing freely w/ vacuum, air filter/box clean,
spark plugs in great shape, choke is activating fully according to
measurements from the Honda Service Manual. Carbs may very well need
to be better sync'ed / cleaned.

Really pleased to see this community is here! Lots of expertise mixed
with good humor - a solid combination. This is my first bike and it's
becoming quite the love affair already.
