I went on a Harley ride a few weeks ago with my 2000 XL1200C. Some guy was all
proud of his custom-painted Sportster beauty so I decided to have some fun. I
asked him..if you know that bike so well then tell me where all of the metric
bolts are on it. He says "the battery terminals...and I've replaced those." I
told him that he missed his front frame bolts which are 14mm on one end and
5/8"
nut on the other. He blustered "I'm going home and I'm getting rid of those!"
There's a fool born every minute. The reason that Harley did that is so some
drunken fool wouldn't take off the frame bolts when trying to fix something
else
on the bike. The metric head would give them enough pause to think "Maybe I
shouldn't take this one off....duhhhhhh." Will the human race ever survive? At
least I didn't carry on about the other 10 mm bolts on his bike. HotrodMamma.

Subject: Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] A brutally honest Harley commercial

Ok so I'm behind on my e-mail (AGAIN) and just watched this one.
         I agree AWESOME!
Heres the thing - I just don't understand how HD survives - most of
those claims are true, plus a few more that I'd add - HD Sparkplugs are
rebadged
NGK plugs. Look at the manufacturing location on the electrical components -
Japan, China.
Lets get real here - like any manufacturer they have to outsource some
parts to make the bike affordable. Therefore, you get foreign made stuff. Kinda
ironic for the 'American Motorcycle' to have Japanese parts.
To be fair - in the past 10 years in particular - there has been more
improvement to HD engines than ever before. I see a lot of them and my Dad
rides
one so I hear things. Bigger engines, fuel injection, reliability improvements
across the board.
But - the strongest thing that HD has going for them - MARKETING.
There
are so many people out there that don't even know that other manufacturers make
cruiser style motorcycles. I see it every day. I've even made the mistake a
couple times myself of identifying a custom painted Kawasaki Vulcan as a HD. In
the mind of the public - Harley Davidson means motorcycle. Anything else just
doesn't mean anything.
         Thoughts?
           -Joey
