In the ongoing saga of electrical problems, I think I have discovered
a new one. this actually goes along with the last problem I was
having. There is a red wire that goes from the voltage regulator to
the negative terminal of the battery. It shorted out causing smoke and
now the bike has a hard time turning over. the little red wire also
seems to be spliced in to a green wire that goes into the connector
immediately above the regulator.

does anybody have any Idea why that wire would even be there?

It is not in any of the wiring diagrams. and I cannot figure out why
it is there other than the bike is not starting without it.
