It is something like transmission fluid or Marvel Mystery oil.  Because it
allows more air to pass through you experience an increase in air flow; and
because it can be cleaned and re - oiled, it saves money; however, I don't
consider that it's as through as  Amsoil's counterpart, which is made of
microfoam and allows nearly as much flow through without allowing dirt to pass.
Hastings makes better air and oil filters also, including transmission filters.
The older oil bath air filters were superior to these paper element filters and
we don't see them anymore, probably because they required "maintenance," like,
clean the thing out and add fresh oil, vs remove old, insert new.
Cleaning out a K&N or other such gauze-and-oil-medium (or Amsoil's foam, every
25,000 mi, I think) type filter is less work and more likely to be
maintained than the old oil bath units; and the fact that you can get the
aerosol spray can and just spray the oil on is also more convenient.
So you are paying for convenience and at the same time parting with more money
than you would have had we the old oil bath units.  Oh - and polluting the
environent more with more trash generated...

or 30W engine oil?  Graham

Javier is correct - K&N's are washable and can be re-coated with their 'Filter
Fluid' - they also provide more flow without losing filtration than a stock
filter (usually a good thing but not for lean jetted Hondas!) I run one on my
car and got about two more miles to the gallon because it uncorked a few more
ponies in the engine and it doesn't shift down as much.
