Hi,

I'm new this list and have been really enjoying it! It's quickly becoming my favourite email of the day. Thank you all for what you send out!

I just got my first real (>50cc) bike, a '92 CB750, and it's been incredible. I'm just learning about the mechanical side of things, and did my first oil&filter change last week. I'm hoping to be able to use the bike as much as a mechanical learning tool as it is my primary form of transport. I'm hoping to get back overseas sometime in the next year or so, and when I do will probably get a bike and do most of the maintenance myself. Figured this is the best way to jump into things.

She had 68K miles when I brought her home, but was well maintained: 65K of those miles was a single owner who is a mechanic, and the last few K were by the second owner (also a mechanic) over a year or two. Been in a garage until I bought her (I have none, but I keep her covered so that's at least something.)

I've managed to put about 1000 miles on her in the last few weeks here in the rainy northern california coast. Cold riding, but because of the weather I've been solo on US 1 for long stretches, which have been stunningly beautiful and great to safely learn turning skills on. Engine is happiest between 3500 and 5500 RPM, and definitely takes a while to warm up.

Recently, I've started to hear a rattle at low RPMs (1500-3000) and low speeds (under 25MPH) in first and second gears after she warms up. Looking online it sounds like it might be the Cam chain control tensioner, which I didn't know existed as a thing before I started trying to figure out how to fix the rattle.

First off, anyone know if this might be something other the cam chain control tensioner?

If this is, I'm curious if I should:
(1) try to adjust the one I have (I've got the Clymer book) and see if that fixes things -- if so, any advice on how to best do this would be greatly appreciated.

(2) figure with the miles she's got on her, I should just get a new one and just replace it (online prices look like it'll be $150 or so). Any suggestions on where I should buy the replacement parts?

(3) assume I'm going to make things worse and instead should just take it to a mechanic. I'm guessing that'll be maybe $250+, which I'm not psyched about, but I also don't want to do thousands in damage if this is something I should wait until I've had a bit more experience with to attempt.

Thanks so much in advance for any advice you might be able to offer.

Peace,
  +Lie
