So I've been having some problems with my 96 750.... A couple of month ago I noticed a slight drop in power and acceleration and harder to start. I replaced the chain and the power and acceleration is back to normal, starting and idle is still harder. I have to use the choke to start it every morning and at the end of the day - which had not been the case in the past.
About a month ago I had new plugs and an air filter put in - replacing the ones from when I bought the bike 26,000+ miles ago and starting actually got worse, meaning I need more choke and when warm it idles at least 200rpm faster. The air cleaner is after market and the plugs are normal, nothing special like NGK or anything like that. So the question is what would cause starting to require more choke? To me, being completely mechanically incompetent, it seems like a carb / air mix problem. But can that just get worse over time? Also, its something that changing the air mix (new air filter) would make the problem worse? I'm an everyday commuter so a don't think stuff settled in the tank and got into the carbs - I think. I haven't had to use the reserve in well over a year. Any ideas / suggestions would be much appreciated.
