First, welcome to the group.. Second, you'll need to research the VIN number on your son's bike to determine the year it was actually manufactured. Honda made the 750 from '91 to '93, skipped a year, then started up again with the '95 model, until '03. So there was no '94 model.
Third, intitially I would inspect the shaft on the outside of the engine casing where the gearshift lever linkage connects. The shaft is a male-type "toothed" kind of cog. A similarly toothed female fitting on the linkage meshes with, and is "clamped" onto the shaft with a pinch bolt. It sounds like the teeth on either the shaft or the clamp are stripped.
