Well, we got the manual as surfswab recommended.. At the same time, I
got a note from blues903 about a broken spring on the shifter arm
pawl. Looking at the pictures it made perfect sense. We spent most of
the day getting in there, since the engine has to be lifted to get at
some of the bolts. Indeed, it was the spring!

It's not completely back together, but the shifter is working. So far,
two great lessons:
1. Get a manual before trying to get into the engine. We probably
could have gotten in, but being able to do things in precise reverse
order to get it back together without parts left over was priceless.
As the guy at the Honda parts counter said: "Where do you think we get
our parts?"
2. Have two people around. Bouncing ideas off each other got us
through several frozen bolts and general frustrations just from
different experiences, perspectives, etc. Of course, there are a lot
of things two people can do better, and there is also the safety
factor. It's a great father-son bonding experience as well.

I'll report back when we get done. We're currently waiting for some
exhaust gaskets before putting the pipes back on.

This is a great group Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement.
