As my dad always said to me when I was learning how to drive a manual
tranny skip gears and get into your upper gears faster and you will
get better gas millage. On my 85 nighthawk 700 going through the
mountains of WA state I just got 57mpg and averaged 50 for the whole
trip. I usauly go 1st, 2nd, 4th & 6th but sometimes 1st, 3rd 5th 6th
with other autos I have had I got up to 15mpg over what the
manufacture said I should get useing this method. One other thing I do
is if the speed limit is 25 or 35 I will get into 6th and cruise. yes
I do get into 7 & 8,000 rpms so haveing fun and conserving gas can be
done at the same time you just have to get in tune with gear
changing.

Have fun and be safe
