Kyle is correct. This is an ignition switch problem at the back of the fuse box. I have an 84 650 and this has happened to me twice. I would be riding along and the bike would just shut off, nothing worked. Some wire wiggling at the fuse box and it would come back to life. This happened 5-6 times one day, not fun. A thorough cleaning of the 2 ignition plug connections at the fuse box and dielectric grease solved the problem.
