Dunno if the newer Yamaha V-twins still have this design, but a buddy has an '02 1100 Silverado, and it has a cartridge-type oil filter mounted inside the crankcase. To get at it requires dropping the front exhaust pipe and the right floorboard (!).
To add insult to injury, it also has a sight glass on the left side, up under the left floorboard, instead of a dipstick. I went to some fan sites and found someone had developed a remote filter kit to solve the first problem and a kind of right-angle viewing mirror for the second. Kit price $300. Just something to keep in mind if you find that kind of engineering as old-fashioned and unneccessary as I do.
