One thing I have learned from those that have ridden them - do not get
the lower CC version of either the Shadow or the V-Star if you intend
to ride two-up. The 650cc V-Star is a very popular 'starter' bike and
there are numerous ones up here even in Maine with very low miles and
only a few years old. However - the universal thing I've heard is that
they are 'underpowered'. In short - because of the relatively low
efficiency of a v-twin style engine instead of an inline engine of the
same displacement - you want to buy heavy on your displacement.
As far as I know the 650 or 1100 V-Star (or Shadow for that
matter) of X year is the same chassis no matter what the displacement.
Going from an Inline engine to a V design will change your
perception of Power per CC - the V style engines produce mid range and
low end power much more easily than inline engines do, but they suffer
on the high end.
For better or for worse - in this country the V-twin design
reigns supreme - yes its probably because "everybody" wants to be on a
HD but can't afford it - and I gotta say, having ridden with numerous
groups over the years, the rest of the group mostly on V-twins, I can
say that most / all of them can pull away from my 1000cc bike - even
when I usually have the same HP rating - or they have less.
A few factors, I'm usually the only bike over 25 years of
age, on most group rides lately I've been two-up, most of the other
riders aren't - but they have 'twist and go' mid-range power and I'm
sitting there dropping gears and shifting like a mad man trying to
keep up.
In short - it depends on who you're riding with if a V-Twin
might be a better choice for you.
I'll say this - in terms of handling - my 33 year old 1000
was able to stick right with a pack of newer cruisers - it was only
accelerating under torque heavy conditions that caused a problem.
