Hello Group;

New to the site. Paul was good enough to sign me up a week or so ago so thought
I’d try a post.

I recently bought a “blast from the past” (1983 550 Nighthawk Candy Presto Red.)

I had one way back in 83 which I bought brand new. (about $3200 including taxes
if I recall). It had a massive heart attack at around 40,000 km and spent the
next many years under the stairs, under a tarp, under a buddy’s patio..etc..
etc.. Finally after too many years of “ I’m gonna fix it up one day” it went
off to the wrecker. I kept the tank, books and pipes for a few more years
before finally turning them over to Craigslist. Never forgot the little black
screamer though and always lamented the fact I was never able to follow through
on the resurrection. We had some good times together..

Well I just lucked out (I hope). I found this one on the internet about 300 km
away with only 11,800 kms (7400 miles to most you guys). Clean as a whistle,
original pipes with no rust. It really looks like someone kept this one inside
and rode it just enough to keep it healthy. It had a 2010 Collector plate on it
and I’m trying to follow up on it’s history.

I changed the oil, plugs and fuel, and fired her up. It was a little rough for
the first couple of km which I attribute to the old gas, but once we got
through that it seemed to run just fine. I’m 100 km into it and had one minor
hesitation taking off from a light. Otherwise it seems all good , though I
haven’t let her “scream” yet. (not 21 anymore I guess ..haha).

Any pro tips or advise from other 550 Nighthawk owners is greatly appreciated.
I think my original bike had valve guide issues which were repaired under
warranty early in the game. Never did figure out exactly what caused the death
of her for sure, but I think the popular opinion at the time was a cam chain
malfunct. Beyond that I don’t recall any issues with that bike.

I’ve attached a couple of photos for interest..

cheers

Jeff

Hello Everybody!

I bought a '93 Nighthawk 750 18 months ago. It currently has 7,000 miles on
it, so it's practically new. I've been looking for a Nighthawk forum, so I'm
glad I found the Nighthawk Lovers.

My last cycle was a 1983 Kawasaki GPz 550, which was a basket case when I
bought it in 2001. I paid more for my helmet than the bike. I spent years
taking it from a not-running-heap to a nice looking runner. I told sport-bike
riders, "I'm riding your motorcycle's great grandfather", since the GPz was
arguably the first true sport bike. I was a regular member & poster on the
gpz550.com forum. I enjoy swapping maintenance tips, riding stories, etc.

In 2009, a good friend of mine asked me to help him find a good used
motorcycle, so he could get back into riding after a 30-year gap. I found the
Nighthawk, which had 3,900 miles at the time, on Craigslist. Since the economy
was horrible, we were able to get it for only $2,500. Bazinga!

In 2011, John said, I'm going to sell my motorcycle, are you interested? My
answer was HELL YES! So, I sold the GPz and became a Honda owner. The NH is
10 years newer, but it is so refined, there is very little comparison.

About a year ago, I moved from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. The riding
season is a LOT longer here (despite the 3" of snow yesterday) and the roads
aren't nearly as crowded. So, if you live in Upstate SC and want to ride, give
me a holler.
