I will always feel that to not have an 'we are all in this together' attitude
is counterproductive.
might I  suggest that you are looking at the wrong people?
I have hung with many hd riders down here including outlaws and such and not
gotten crap from any of them
heck even mikes cycles there in new Smyrna is owned by a guy who prefers hds
but sells a LOT of japanese bikes.
that's who I got my 650 from.

I dunno what to tell you paul. to me what you don't like about Harleys is what
makes them appealing to me.
the sheer genius of making a motorcycle [I am only talking about the pre evo
bikes now, post evo, there is very little difference between a Harley and a
Japanese bike.]  that can be changed and altered from amongst a approx. 30 yr
span. I also like the simplicity of them. pretty much anyone can rebuild a
panhead or a shovelhead. they have so few working parts and are about as
simplistic as an internal combustion engine vehicle can be.
I knew a guy a while ago who had a shovel pan, thats right, a cone motor
bottom end and a panhead top end. one of the prettiest bikes ive ever seen.
try swapping parts from two Japanese bikes designed 30 yrs apart.
old iron Harleys have their place imo as do Japanese bikes.

you seem to be clumping all the Harley riders into one RUB category. surely you
must know that there are just as many weekend jockeys on Japanese bikes as
there are on hds. no hate for them?
before I moved down here, I rode all year round in Connecticut as did all the
guys I hung with, more than  a few times, I had to stop and clear the snow from
under the frame cause the front wheel came off the ground from snow caught
under the frame again, as did the guys I rode with.
I cant stand any kind of 'my type of bike is better than yours' attitude, which
IMO Harley bashing jokes are [ I act exactly the same when 'Harley people' talk
crap about Japanese bikes] , even in jest its counterproductive. you don't know
who reads your threads and thinks its cool to behave like that as a result. its
like the perpetuation of any kind of slurs. it always hurts more than it helps.
I found you a long time before I ever posted here and I certainly don't have
the ego to think I am the only one smart enough to do it.

then  you go on to talk about how hd riders change exhausts that wouldn't meet
noise codes and aftermarket intakes that void epa restrictions?
you really don't think that most 'crotch rocket' jap bike riders do exactly the
same thing? I see it every day im on the road. heck. theres a shop in Daytona
that specializes in hot rodding Japanese bikes.

let me give you an example of the kind of person I am. I went to the cabbage
patch a long time ago and saw the 'no ni$$ers allowed sign on the door, I left
and tell anyone wholl listen why I wont go back. it was a nice ride home from
samsula. btw cabbage path is open all year round.
I went to earthquakes while a band was there a long time ago and they were
playing david allen coe songs, I left and told anyone who would listen why it
sucked.
since earthquakes is now closed, that kind of thing works.
maybe you don't remember all the 'bikers rights' fights of the 80s with
relation to insurance, helmet laws and recognition of bikes on the road in
general but I lived it. it took EVERYONE to get things better.

frankly imo bike bashing either way is boring and elitist. am I saying that ive
never done it? hell no but im not excusing it either. it was wrong.
do I think the weekend riders who 'play' biker on both jap and us bikes are
silly? of course but so are 250 million other people in the usa. so are you at
some things so am I at some things. that's life
sorry but theres never any use for bashing other peoples rides no matter which
side you are on. personally im not a biker or a motorcyclist. im simply a
person who enjoys motorycles more than I enjoy cars. I cant explain it, I just
feel great when im riding no matter what im riding. [prolly why im such an
aggressive rider when the bike has the power to do it and my 650 does. its no
kawi h2 but its got a 10 grand redline and I use it the way it was built to be
used.]
well to be honest, cause im quite large so I didn't enjoy the 150 cc Chinese
scooter I had before the 650 and after the Harley. all I felt most of the time
was pity for the poor bike. :) .but I loved loved loved the 125cc vespa I had
when I was 16.

ps as far as the buffalo vs leather thing is concerned, thicker hide is
certainly better but even if you go down at 60-65, a basic riding leather will
be enough to protect you as you slide. from experience, its the trying to make
sure that you don't slide into anything with important parts of your body that
is most important. it isn't the sliding that kills riders, its the sudden stops
from sliding or not sliding at all and skipping straight to the sudden stop.
want to have some fun reading about the old days to lighten things up a little
now?
this is an article about an old job I had in the late 70s to around 1980

well that's my rant reply. if you don't want me to speak my mind let me know

My comments about HD are out of jest. My biggest problem with HD has nothing
about the bike, but the bikers on them and what they do to them. I cant stand
the biker attitude. I do not consider myself a biker, i am a motorcyclist. I
dont wear black leather because thays what you do on a bike, i wear thick
buffalo because it will save my skin if i go.down on i 4 (yes, im in central
florida too, live just south of daytona and work in sanford). I dont dust off
my ride twice a year to take it to the cabbage patch (big biker attraction
durring bike week and biketoberfest for.those not in florida). I ride 83 miles
commute daily. I dont own a car, my goldwing is my only transportation and i
like.it that way.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with HD from the FACTORY. The dealer
installed add ons are the first.step in what i dont like. I chalange anybody to
go to there local harley dealer and find a single HD that is still factory.
Between "custom" exausts that woild never meet noise code, aftermarket intakes
that void epa restrictions, and the bikers that add other aftermarket
"upgrades" when they dont understand the stages involved in them (eg, if you
have a less restrictive airfilter, you need to richen your carbs to maintain
proper air/fuel mix)...
One reason i like this group is because most of us here are very lighthearted
and know how to work on there bikes, or atleast know to ask and they wont be
bashed for not knowing
