At least my 700S has the clutch switch at the lever but another switch on the transmission. I would not call either one of these diodes, but you might be. Not sure. When mine is not in N, it won't start unless clutch is in. When it WAS in N, but not indicating in N, it still wouldn't start unless I also pulled in the clutch. That switch also told the panel LCD what gear I was in and didn't work right. Replaced it and now I can start without pulling in the clutch unless I am not in N. So some relation there.
The burned plug could be someone just cranking and cranking?? Might not even have a problem. If you want to connect straight to battery, use a jumper cable, as in for jump starting a car. That will carry the amps! Wife says she wants a screen porch before a motorcycle.
