The clutch diode is hidden under the seat, connected directly to the wiring harness. It drove me crazy trying to find it. Once I did, I replaced it, and voila! the neutral light only comes on when it's supposed to. But that is another bike...
Not clear in your post which switch you replaced, handlebar or transmission. I have an extra handlebar unit that I could replace easily. How the transmission relays that it is in neutral to the electrical system, I have never been able to determine. Burning the plug from cranking and cranking makes sense. The PO did lots of cranking before he gave up and sold it. Carbs so gummed he couldn't pull the choke should have tipped him off that something was amiss. Not sure how to get jumper cables into the miniplug on the wiring harness. As I wrote before, I did short the solenoid with a screwdriver and it worked. Can I start it that way? I pulled the fuel line from a running bike and ran it off a bottle. A LOT of gas gushed out, so now I'm not so sure the pump was good. Or it could be gummed and moving slowly? Will explore. I've got a fuel pump off my parts bike that I think is OK. In a pinch I'll use that one. Lastly, take a look at this clip from the manual. Looks promising, but I can't help but wonder why the writer didn't happen to mention what to do in case the test indicates a problem. BTW, the side stand is not switched. I once hit the start button while standing next to it with the bike in gear (different bike). It sent me running down the driveway. That bike will now not start unless it is in neutral, even if the clutch is in. Go figure.
