It's doable, but query the locksmith first to ascertain if he knows how 
and/or has the experience and/or wan/ts to mess with it.  The ones who do 
are usually riders themselves and have branched out to specialize in 
motorcycles.  Ask also if he has
 the model-specific blanks for your son's model/year to work from. 

The process is spendier than having a duplicate cut from an existing 
key, but you can save a ton by taking the bike to his shop rather than 
paying his transportation for a service call at your location.  That's what 
cost me so much.
