Oh man, I'm no starter expert I'm just a guy who took pics when I rebuilt my own. Anyways, I don't recall that metal bit being melted/glued/soldered into the plastic ring when I did mine. My rebuild kit didn't come with the metal ring, but it did come with that metal bit holding the two brushes and that bolted into the plastic ring. Did yours come with the metal bit? If so, can you cut that out of the plastic ring without destroying it?
