I removed the starter on the 83 nh 650. I hooked it up to a twelve volt power source and verified Allen's T's preliminary diagnosis. The starter is dead. I received the rebuild kit today and will be doing the rebuild saturday. I jhust have one question. When I removed the starter it did not come out easily. I am assuming that is do to age. When i reinstall is it safe to use some grease to make the spline and o ring seal slide in more easily, or should i just tap it slightly in with my hand to get it to line up with the gears?
