Glenn, yes I do use ear plugs with both of my comm systems, though the Kie unit has a Lowe volume than the Scala. The key is speaker placement you want it just under the front of you ear. On a bike with no fairing I can hold a conversation just fine up to about 70-75 before the wind noise gets too great. Maybe if I had one of those wind stoppers on the bottom of my helmet and if it wasn't a modular I could hear at faster speeds.
