I either use an impact driver, if that's what it's called--spring loaded 
and you hit it with a hammer, or I put a notch in the screw head with a 
dremel and tap it laterally with a chisel in the notch. If that doesn't 
work, I drill it out with left hand drill bits after treatment with Liquid 
Wrench.

The correct operation after cooldown makes me think it might not be the 
clutch diode. At least mine never worked right until I changed the diode.
